Check a part before buying

Car part compatibility check by VIN

Found a replacement part but unsure whether it fits your vehicle? Send your VIN, the part number and brand, plus any available photos or listing details. VIN Expert compares the selected part with the vehicle specification and provides a written conclusion, including any conditions or uncertainty.

A manual written consultation. VIN Expert does not sell or ship parts.

When is a compatibility check useful?

For owners, workshops and parts businesses that already have a candidate part and need to check its application.

Before an online purchase

Check the exact part reference from a listing when a seller lists several models, engines or production years.

When several versions exist

Clarify differences related to production date, equipment, mounting position or catalogue restrictions.

When replacing an existing part

Compare a proposed replacement with the vehicle specification and available details from the installed component.

What should you send?

  • The full 17-character VIN of the vehicle receiving the part.
  • The exact number and brand of the proposed part. Include all letters and suffixes.
  • A description of the part and its mounting position, where relevant.
  • Available photos of labels, connectors, mountings or the existing part, plus listing details.
  • Details of known modifications or previous component replacements that may affect compatibility.

The OEM number field is optional. You can put an aftermarket reference, brand and listing details in the request description. If you have no candidate part, choose the OEM part number service instead.

What will you receive?

  • A written conclusion on whether the supplied information supports compatibility, indicates a mismatch or is insufficient for confirmation.
  • Relevant application conditions, such as equipment, production range or mounting position, where established.
  • An explanation of any conflicting references or additional information needed to complete the check.

This is a catalogue and information check, without physical inspection or test fitting. Compatibility does not establish the condition, authenticity or quality of a particular item.

A manual review of the vehicle and the proposed part

Ivo Baharov reviews requests personally, drawing on over 20 years of automotive parts experience. Checks use PartsLink24 and original manufacturer EPC catalogues where covered, together with the supplied part references and available application information.

An aftermarket reference must be assessed together with its brand and application data. A matching description or similar appearance alone is not enough.

Why can a part listed for your model still be unsuitable?

A model range can contain different braking systems, engines, transmissions and equipment packages. Production changes, left and right positions, connectors and mounting details can also affect which version is required.

The VIN helps identify the factory specification. Previous modifications and some component variants may still require labels, photos or measurements. Where evidence is insufficient, the result explains the limitation.

How it works

  1. 1

    Describe the proposed replacement

Sign in or create an account, choose the compatibility check service and send the VIN, number of positions and details of each proposed part.

  2. 2

    We compare the available information

We review the vehicle specification and part references manually, and ask for clarification where needed.

  3. 3

    Read the conclusion

For standard paid requests, payment is due after the result is ready and unlocks access. Eligible free requests follow the existing free-request process.

For requests requiring an individual quote, you receive a quote for approval before work begins.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from finding an OEM part number?

An OEM number request identifies the original reference for a required part. A compatibility check starts with a particular proposed part and assesses whether it is suitable for your vehicle.

Can you check an aftermarket part?

Yes, where the reference and application information allow a meaningful comparison. Send the brand and exact part number. A search for alternative products is a separate service.

Can you check a used part from another vehicle?

Send your vehicle VIN, the used part number and label photos. Include the donor VIN if available. Sharing a model name does not establish compatibility, and the check does not assess the used part's condition.

Is a seller's model list enough?

It can be a starting point, but broad model lists may omit equipment restrictions or production changes. Send the exact product reference and relevant listing details.

Can every part be confirmed as compatible?

No. Missing references, limited catalogue coverage or vehicle modifications can prevent confirmation. We explain whether the information supports compatibility, indicates a mismatch or leaves the question unresolved.

Does compatibility mean an electronic module will work immediately?

Not necessarily. Depending on the component, coding, programming, calibration or other installation requirements may apply. A catalogue match alone does not confirm these requirements have been met.

Is the first request always free?

No. The system determines eligibility for your account. The request form displays whether the request is free and the applicable price.
